Description of the theft
I believe a thief is casing bikes on Stanford's campus and crowding racks with beater bikes (older bikes), taping the racks, and quickly making a move on OTHER targeted bikes which happen to select the chosen pre-cut rack.
This is what happened to me today – the rack was crowded with other bikes, and so my only option was to lock my U-Lock to my frame, and NOT (as usual) through the rear wheel/crank, since the frame was crowded with other bikes.
This gave the thief an opportunity to remove the pre-cut paet of the bike RACK & make a getaway with my bike, since the loose U-Lock had not secured the crank or wheel (yes, I ought to have used a cable too, but he would have made quick work of the cable lock too).
