Bicycle detail

I was out for a long ride, stopped to meet with some people, locked the bike to a post with a cable lock, even though we were gathered right next to the bike. I was seated watching the bike for the hour that we were meeting, but as the meeting adjourned and I turned to put on my bike shoes and gloves, a man (who apparently lives next door?) cut the lock and quickly rode away with the bike before anyone could stop him.
