Description of the theft
Parked at parent's home in yard while I BBQ'd lunch in back yard. We'd never had burglaries in N. Berkeley in 1950-1970. Many residents left doors unlocked. The times changed for the worse with property crimes. One minute it was there, the next it was gone. I think someone at Berkeley High School knew where I lived, and stole my bike. It looks almost new, as if it sat unused for 3-decades, and the original thief gave the bike to his grandson. The bike has a Kryptonite lock holder attached to the seat tube, and a 6-ft cable encased in translucent blue plastic. It has Stronglight Cranks, the toe clips removed, frame has black Nervix lugs, forks have a chrome crown & chrome tips & eyelets for a rack and fenders, chain stays and seat stays have chromed tips with eyelets for a rack & fender, stock alloy stem, handlebars, Brooks saddle, alloy seatpost, Simplex derailleurs have been changed to alloy Japanese parts, original 5-cog cluster had high gears (13-15-17-19-21) removed for lower gears. It has Mafac center-pull brakes front & rear. This was a road racing bike. I rode up Spruce & Grizzly Peak daily, An down Wildcat to Dam Rd., and out to Alhambra Valley Rd. Now it's set-up as a non serious commuter bicycle, likely this 20's y.o. cyclist never rebuilt a bottom bracket, headset, hubs, etc., as it no longer has it's Mavic rims, nor Normandy hubs. My stolen bike is going to be trashed, ruined by an idiot who doesn't know the value of working to pay for this bike, and keep it mechanically viable. I had totally cleaned inspected all bearings, races, and regreased them early 1970, and stolen shortly thereafter. My bike isn't being maintained properly - it will be used up, worn out, and trashed. When I saw it Oct 2007, I saw white grease oozing out of bottom bracket - the same white grease I had used in 1970. I got a good look at the person with my bike. He was about 18-20 y.o., Caucasian, short blonde brown hair blown back, brown eyes, 5'10", gray jacket zipped up to his neck, no helmet, huge yellow backpack full of books. He had just exited the ASUC Bookstore southern door onto lower Sproul Plaza. He rode down Bancroft Ave, making a right turn North onto Oxford St.
For information resulting in the return of my bike, a generous reward awaits. For the physical return of my bike, there's a $500-$1,000 reward awaiting. Please, if you see a fairly new looking 22 inch White Peugeot PX-10 ten speed, a man about 27-30 y.o., fitting the description above, make a note of where you saw this. If you're able to speak to him, ask his name and where he lives, works, a phone number, ask if you can turn the bike upside down to see the serial # on the bottom bracket (if he won't let you, he's hiding the fact that the serial numbers uniquely tell you who owns the bike), any info could be of use, the key to getting my bike back. I'm offering a generous reward in my bikes return, as I want it back so badly it hurts. Every night I'm in despair w/o my PX-10 I worked so hard on my paper route, rain or shine, in the cold, and collecting money from my ustomers took considerable time for many months in order to finally have enough to buy this special bicycle, only to have it stolen 3 years later, probably someone from Berkeley High School finding out where I lived. Nobody else could have appreciated my bicycle as I did. It was my first love! Please, someone out there will see it, find out about it! I'm dying to get it back, no other bicycle will do. Please Keep Your Eyes Open For My Bicycle! Thank You!
