Description of the theft
On the evening of Sunday 9/3/2017, at approx 8:30pm, I parked my Silver 2014 Ford Explorer in a parking space at 301 Cannery Row, across the street from the Monterey Plaza Hotel. My girlfriend was with me. I had a locking bike rack on the rear of my car with two bikes on it, my girlfriend's Terry mountain bike, and my 2007 Specialized Stumpjumper mountain bike. Both were locked to the rack with the rack's built-in locking mechanism. The Stumpjumper however had a removable extension crossbar attached to it's frame, which was needed to allow it to be attached to the rack. We walked from that location into the Monterey Plaza Hotel to eat dinner, and then afterwards did some shopping in the nearby shops that were still open.
At approximately 11pm, we returned to the car, and found that the Stumpjumper had been stolen off the rack by forcibly jamming/maneuvering the extension bar. With the extension bar attached to the Stumpjumper (without a separate lock attached) this is possible, but would have required that the thief(s) make a lot of noise and spend significant effort to do so.
The Terry mountain bike was NOT stolen. Removing it would have taken further considerable effort, so it is likely that the thief was hurried once the Stumpjumper was removed and rode off before taking the time to steal the second bike. There was some damage to the Terry mountain bike bottle cage, a sign that either the theif was trying to also force it off the rack, or that the damage occurred while the Stumpjumper was being forced off the rack.
